Diagnosis Digital-Rectal Examination (DRE)

During the rectal examination, the urologist inserts a finger in the rectum to examine the surface of the prostatic gland. Healthy prostate tissue is soft like that of the cartilage of the hand where the thumb meets the palm. Cancerous prostate tissue, however, is solid, hard as wood and sometimes uneven. In about 60% of cases, an experienced urologist can detect suspicious areas, that must be investigated with further tests.
